What do I do if my patient receives a dead battery?

Rayovac has the most consistent battery on the market because of our strict manufacturing requirements which include 306 quality checks, 69 finishes cell test, and many more.  Make sure that you let your hearing aid batteries air up for at least one minute before putting them into your device.  This minute allows air to enter the battery and increase the voltage. 

If you are a ProLine customer and one of your customers complains that they’ve received a dead battery please keep the package they came in and call Rayovac so we can replace the batteries for your patient.

What is zinc air technology?
Zinc Air is the most popular power system for hearing aids. Through a unique construction that utilizes air from outside the battery, these batteries pack maximum energy into each battery cell. With zinc air batteries, you can expect fewer battery replacements, clearer tones and fewer volume adjustments.
What is the tab for?
The tab is designed to keep air out of the hearing aid battery. These batteries are referred to as zinc air, since air is an active ingredient in making this battery work. The tab prevents air from entering the battery and activating it before it is ready to be used. To activate your battery simply remove the tab, allowing air to enter the battery.
Will the batteries differ from ear to ear?
Yes – it is very uncommon that both ears have equal hearing loss. This often means that the wearer shouldn't expect equal battery life from their batteries. Unfortunately, this is a common misunderstanding for individuals that recently received their second hearing aid.
How often should I tell my patients to change their hearing aid batteries?
Many hearing aid wearers wait until their aid signals low battery life to change their batteries. Others may change them on a regularly scheduled day. Once you become familiar with your aid and batteries, you can determine which system works best for you.
How should I recommend patients store and carry their batteries?
  • You should store your hearing aid batteries at room temperature.
  • Avoid storing batteries in hot places since heat will shorten the life of the batteries.
  • Refrigeration is also not recommended.
  • Batteries should not be carried in your pocket or purse since metal objects such as coins or keys can short out batteries.
  • Store and discard batteries in places that cannot be reached by infants or children.

Are hearing aid batteries affected by the weather?

Yes – mostly by humidity.

  • Humid/tropical environments can cause the battery to take on moisture and have a shorter life.
  • Dryness from colder environments can sometimes dry-out the battery causing premature failure.
What other factors impact hearing aid battery life?
  • Noise Environment – a battery will drain less in a library or at home versus a restaurant or rock concert.
  • Volume Setting – if you have your hearing aid “maxed out” on volume, this will prematurely drain the battery.
  • Sweat & Perspiration – this is a very bad thing for batteries and will cause it to short out. It is important to make sure that your hearing aids remain dry and in good condition.
What is the best way to test the remaining power of a hearing aid battery?
We do not recommend testing hearing aid batteries unless you’re testing to see if the battery is simply working or dead. This is because hearing aid batteries stay at a steady voltage, around 1.25-1.4, then drops off quickly (in a couple of hours) and dies.  The best way to test a battery is in your hearing device. 
What voltage do hearing aid batteries go down to before they need replacing?
The cut off point for voltage varies by the aid. On average a hearing aid battery will power an aid until the battery reaches 1.05 volts. Keep in mind that the battery stays at a steady voltage, around 1.25-1.4, then drops off quickly (in a couple of hours), and dies.
Why does battery life vary by battery size?
Battery life varies by size because a larger battery has more room for more zinc. More zinc = more life. Battery life also varies because of many other factors such as weather, volume setting, environmental noises, and sweat and perspiration (please see "Are hearing aid batteries affected by weather" and "What other factors impact hearing aid battery life" for more information).
Are Rayovac hearing aid batteries rechargeable?
No – Rayovac currently does not offer rechargeable hearing aid batteries nor can our current hearing aid batteries be charged in other manufacture’s chargers.
Are hearing aid batteries harmful to have near your brain?
No. Some people fear that the batteries in their aid, which sit in their ear very close to their brain, will cause cancer or other harmful effects because of the rumors that cell phones can cause cancer or brain tumors. Cell phones emit a low level of electromagnetic energy which is where the hypothesis that cell phones cause cancer came from. Hearing aid batteries do not emit any electromagnetic energy. Also, according to the FDA there is no current scientific evidence that link the low levels of electromagnetic energy emitted by hand-held cellular phones to cancer. Hearing aid batteries are not harmful to people in anyway under normal usage but could be potentially hazardous if swallowed. Please contact poison control if any hearing aid batteries are swallowed.
